Story and Photos by James Walker
Vocalist Loretta Lee and her band mates of keyboardist Joel Burt, bassist Bob
Johnson, and drummer Walter Kindred, recently graced the stage at Room 43 during
the weekly Hyde Park Jazz Society's Sunday night jazz session.
The band opened the first set with the Horace Silver classic "Song for My
Father". Keyboardist Joel Burt , outstanding all night , was superb on this
number. "Lady" Lee primarily rendered classics like "Witchcraft", "Killer
Joe","Solitude" and did some fine scatting on "Bye Bye Blackbird".
The second set consisted of Lady Lee's portrayal of Billie Holiday with "All Of
Me","Them There Eyes", "Ain't Nobody's Business", "God Bless The Child" , and
"Treat Me Right Baby". Guest saxophonist Tazamasun was excellent accompanying Lee
on "All of Me". The capacity crowd seemed to really enjoy this segment of Lady
Lee's program.
Saxophonist Ari Brown appears at Room 43 this Sunday, Dec.20th. For information
